Touching History Playaway Adult Nonfiction Lynn Spencer Joyce Bean 9781615746002 Books
Lynn Spencer's book on 9/11, "Touching History", is not a new book. It was originally published in 2008, and then republished in 2018. Spencer covers the response of the American air system - commercial, general, and governmental - to the attacks on 9/11.Most people reading this review will remember "that day"; the skies were so blue almost everywhere in the country that they were termed by flyers as "severe clear". It was into those skies that three wide-bodied airplanes were flown into buildings and another went into the ground in rural Pennsylvania. But what of the other commercial airplanes in the air that day? Lynn Spencer interviewed pilots - both commercial and military - and airline and government officials as the skies were cleared. Spencer is a very good writer and the book is very interesting.
By the way, there's a fantastic graphic on You Tube. I can't link but if you put in "September 11th 2001 Airspace Shutdown (With Timeline) "

Touching History Playaway Adult Nonfiction Lynn Spencer Joyce Bean 9781615746002 Books Reviews
WOW!!! I don't know where to start, so I will just blurt out a few thoughts. Excellent book...Ms. Spencer did an exceptional job explaining procedures, defining aviation terms and conveying how air traffic controllers, pilots and other aviation personnel were feeling as the events of 911 unraveled. Very emotional book for me...I am not a touchy feely kind of guy. I tried to imagine how these pilots felt after their cockpits were violated by terrorists. With 25 years experience in aviation as a pilot, I learned a lot about air traffic control and their procedures. This book really stimulated my mind on how 911 events took place and made me consider human behavior that was unimaginable prior to ten years ago. A must read for anyone who is interested in aviation. Highly recommend this book for everyone else. It puts a whole different dimension on the events of 911. Ms. Spencer, you are a very talented writer. Congratulations on your remarkable book!
Lynn Spencer did an outstanding job with this title, and collected many different perspectives regarding that tragic, fateful day in American history. This book deals mainly with the FAA, ATC and military response to the simultaneous hijackings that occurred on September 11,2001. I really couldn't put this down, and didn't want it to end. Spencer does a masterful job of collecting and summarizing the events that day, from a unique perspective----our nation's armed forces and National Guard. I highly recommend this book and guarantee once you start reading, you won't stop. Very well done.
I could not put this book down and read it cover to cover in two days! I highly recommend this book to anyone who's interested in military history or 9/11. During 9/11, I was stationed as active duty AF overseas in Germany so I find myself reading alot of this time period, to capture the events as they occured from within the country on that fateful day. This book takes a snapshot of what occured in our airspace on 9/11 and how unprepared we were for such an event to occur. Many kudos to our brave men and women (civilian and military alike) who took that lack of a battle-plan and instantly reacted to provide protection for our Nation's skies. This book was praised and recommended to me by an Air Force and commercial pilot--a great read and worth the price (I bought it for my )!
This book is one you can't put down! I fought to stay awake the first night, as I didn't want to stop until the next morning. This book examines the events of September 11th from the perspective of what happened to many of the commercial airliners, and military fighter pilots who were flying that day. The events described in the book uncover some new facts not heard in the 9-11 commission reports. The author spent 3 years interviewing both commercial pilots and military pilots who were part of the tragedy that day. She (the author) does a wonderful job in writing and it reads almost like a Tom Clancy novel. Any pilots would enjoy this book, as much of it is written from the perspective of a pilot (as is the author).
I was struck by my own personal feelings, I got that sick heavy feeling in the pit of my stomach, the feelings of anger, fear and helplessness that I experienced on September 11th. Author Spencer did a great job, and I highly recommend this book to the casual reader who is interested in the events of 9-11, as well as all pilots who have an interest.
Lynn Spencer's "Touching History The Untold Story of the Drama That Unfolded in the Skies Over America on 9/11" is the fascinating and gripping tale of the actions in the skies on 9/11 - from the airliners to jetfighters to the air traffic controllers. Based extensively on interviews and official transcripts, Spencer recreates the confusion, shock, disbelief, and horror of 9/11.
Spencer recounts the confusion in the air traffic control centers as the hijacked flights lose contact and the story of the first National Guard fighters to fly over New York City that day. She describes the confused but effective response as two different groups of fighter jets set up a combat air patrol over DC and begin intercepting air traffic. She focuses heavily on other airline pilots and their reactions to the scanty information they received ("secure your cabins," "land immediately," "US airspace is closed," etc.). And she also covers the responses by the FAA and NORAD as NORAD does the unprecedented closing US airspace for the first time in history.
My one minor criticism is that the book is written in the present tense, which I found odd for a book creating a historical record. This was done presumably to add to the drama, but instead I found reading about 7 year-old events in the present tense a bit distracting.
This book does an excellent job taking the reader back to that infamous day and recreating the fog of war as America slowly realized we were under attack and had to fashion a response for this unexpected attack. Spencer does a solid job unraveling the many complex events of that day and turning them into a compelling narrative. Every American should read this book.
